Can I Get a Daddy From the Audience?

3 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU START PAGEANT MODELLING

As I was preparing to write this, I randomly asked my younger sister what questions you should ask yourself before joining pageants, I thought she had lived with me long enough to pick a few things.

This mama said,

“Am I tall? Am I short? Am I fat? Can I get a Daddy from the audience?”

I am laughing even as I type this because, what the hell?

Anyway, seriously, these are the three things you should ask yourself before you embark on your pageant journey.

1. WHAT IS YOUR END GAME?

In other words, what is your why? Do you just want as many titles as you can gather? Are you competing for fun? Do you want a career in pageant industry? Do you want pageants to be a stepping stone to high fashion modelling? All these reasons are VALID and address a need in you. But knowing it before hand will guide you.

2. ARE YOUR GOALS LONG TERM OR SHORT TERM?

If your goals are short term, you can wing every pageant you go into, losing some and winning some as you go.

If they are long-term, like if you want a career or to make a living out of this, go big or go home. Invest in yourself, educate yourself, network and improve yourself.

3. WHAT AM I GETTING INTO?

People come into pageants starry_eyed, and thinking that one title is what it will take to propel them to big things – money, fame and, big boys from the audience as my sister hilariously puts it.

This industry is  big and diverse and it is easy to take the plunge out of excitement and get lost. It take time, money and will shred your mental health if you are not careful or if you go in without an agenda.

So if you really are sure that this is the path you want to take, first make sure Pageants are the only path to get what you want.

Otherwise if there are easier ways to get there, take them. Trust me on this.

With that out of the way, do your research. Seek guidance. Understand the industry. Come prepared. Ask yourself if what you are putting in is equal to what you are getting.

I wish you the best of luck as you embark on your pageant journey.

Pageant Judge & Coach.
